Let's Get Real

I Am Aware- R is For Relationships

Let’s now look at the letter, “R” and a powerful word associated with it in this awareness phrase: Relationship.

“…‘It is not good that the man should be alone…’.”

Genesis 2:18

When it comes to recovery from disordered eating and image issues, isolation can be a dangerous thing. Since most eating disorder behavior hinges on secrecy, separating from others can create the harmful environment to practice such things as starving, binging, purging and even other forms of self-injury like cutting.

We need people; we need socialization.

However, many of us who struggle with these disorders convince ourselves of the lie, “I don’t need anyone else as long as I have this.”

Relationships keep us grounded and accountable.

Often, in the midst of our disorders, we’re far from objective to correctly view ourselves. It takes someone outside of us to see and call out what’s going on.

And beyond this, relationships can be a source of support, love and help. Isolation keeps us away from ALL of that.

When we are aware of who and how we are, we naturally occupy a space which allows people in. We are known and are freed up to know others.

Be Present

I Am Aware- A is For Acceptance

The next letter we look at is another “A.” And what could be a better “A” word than that of acceptance?

This is a gigantic struggle for many of us who grapple with disordered food, weight and body image issues. A lot of us simply don’t fee; “enough.” You can attach anything next to that “enough” judgment. Regardless, we come away feeling unacceptable… and unlovable.

But Divine Eyes see us much differently…

“I have chosen you and have not cast you away.”

Isaiah 41:9

Indeed, you and I are not rejected.

“To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.”

Ephesians 1:6

There is no qualifying standard held against us as far as The Most High is concerned. And there is certainly no image or weight standard held against us!

Struggling For a New World

I Am Aware- W is For Wisdom

“W” is our next letter in the statement, “I am aware. And a fantastic “W” word to look at, as far as recovery goes, is Wisdom.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”

James 1:5

Hand in hand with accepting the ugly truth of ourselves and the role we have played in our own addictive and destructive choices, is recognizing our dire need for wisdom.

We don’t know it all. Period.

“For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.”

1 Corinthians 13:12

The Most High assures us He will lead and guide us if we seek wisdom and His help…

“Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, This is the way, walk in it, whenever you turn to the right hand, and whenever turn to the left.’”

Isaiah 30:21

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go: I will guide you with My eye.”

Psalm 32:8

Therefore, we should be encouraged to go for it. Ask. Seek. Knock. Obtain that wisdom, gaining a greater understanding of who we are and why we do the things we do.

“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.”

Proverbs 4:7

Let’s get it, then!
