Self- Control Expert Level?
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”
Galatians 5:22-23
I love this image.
It epitomizes the challenge of that less than fun, good ole’ self- control issue. Nope, no one really jumps up and down with glee about getting ahold of ourselves and saying no to all that looks like excess and extreme fun, things, which, by the way, we usually regret the following day.
So, especially in this holiday season, there are a lot of us, in one way or another, who have the spiritual, emotional and hey, let’s face it, the almost literal “treats” balancing on our noses, fully in view, in our temptation sight line. Oh, man, do we ever want to overindulge, overdo it, let lose, and go to town on whatever we deem as that irresistible thing!
We’re not thrilled about moderation and controlling ourselves. We want what we want and we want it however we want it.
And there’s nothing wrong with enjoying the holiday season, for after all, God has given us all things to enjoy (1 Timothy 6:17).
But we should never lose sight of the reality that God has also given us the power of self- control.
“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”
2 Timothy 1:7
It can be difficult, however, for us to remember that Truth as we often fall and fail in our recovery and life issues. It’s hard to feel like a victorious, in control person if we’re in the middle of some kind of struggling “bottom” experience.
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”
Proverbs 4:23
But, no matter where we are on the spectrum of self-control, no matter if we feel good about how we’re handling our lives or if we’re truly struggling with some out of control behavior, addiction or disorder, we can choose another choice, be it thought, word, decision or deed.
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”
Proverbs 18:21
And death and life are in the power of our next choice. So, what will it be?
We need not to feel intimidated, helpless and powerless about this prospect. You and I do have the power. It’s about changing our thoughts and embrace God’s thoughts.
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
Romans 12:2
I know it’s a challenge, but it IS possible! After all…
“I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”
Philippians 4:13
Regardless of how you’re handling temptation, self-control and your chosen “treats,” please remember God is there to help you.
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go: I will guide you with My eye.”
Psalm 32:8
The matter of self-control is not a onetime, perfect act. Rather, it is an ongoing process, one which has all sorts of learning lessons. Don’t beat yourself up and don’t convince yourself that you have no self-control whatsoever! You do! It won’t be perfect, but it is a worthy pursuit, one God will honor.
Again, please remember…
“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”
2 Timothy 1:7
That includes you!
