What image
comes to mind when you think of an eating disorder? A teenage girl on a scale?
A girl throwing up? A woman constantly counting calories and reading diet
books? What do these images have in common? They’re all female images.
And that’s
part of the problem. Eating disorders are still considered to be a “girl’s
issue.” And that’s not the whole story- far from it, in fact. Image-it’s there
from the start and how often do we get it wrong?
“An
estimated 10-15% of people with anorexia or bulimia are male.”
“Men are less likely to seek treatment for eating disorders because of the perception that they are ‘woman’s diseases.’”
As much stigma as there is attached to females suffering,
there appears to be even more for boys and men suffering.
Therefore,
if you are a guy out there, please know you’re not the only one who grapples
with this issue. There is help and hope. And, no matter how you feel, what your
experience has been in life, you are never disqualified from resembling God’s
Image!
“And God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let
them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and
over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that
creepeth upon the earth.’ So God created man in his own image, in the image of
God created he him; male and female created he them.”
