Identity Theft (As a person thinks, so is he/she)

“As a man thinketh…”

A few years ago, my husband and I experienced the wonderful experience of identity theft. Yeah. It was great. Fortunately, we were alerted right away. The giveaway was the usual purchases of camping equipment and airline tickets to Las Vegas. It wasn’t typical of us, by any means.

Now, we’re in an unfortunate time of increased identity theft. With so much online shopping, email and account information, potentially accessible to crafty hackers out there, we can fall victim to having identity theft hit us.

Spiritually, it also impacts us. Scriptures tells us,

“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he...”
Proverbs 23:7

So, what are we thinking about, let alone, believing about ourselves, who God called us to be? Does it match up? We can fall victim to believing the lies over God’s truth. That’s harmful. That’s identity theft.

Like the phone call alert we received about the unusual credit card purchases years’ ago, God gives us an alert to check against as well: His Word:

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.”
Isaiah 55:8-9

Who are you then? Well, here’s a sampling:
“Since you were precious in my sight… I have loved you…”
Isaiah 43:4

“I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made…”
Psalm 139:14

“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
2 Corinthians 5:17

“I have chosen you and have not cast you away.”
Isaiah 41:9

The next time a thought, a label, a name comes up, trying to pin itself to you, stop. Ask where this came from; ask yourself, “is this really me or is this an attempt at identity theft?”
