Big Eyes and Deception

“What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs.”

Matthew 10:27

This holiday season, director Tim Burton is releasing his latest film, “Big Eyes.”
It depicts the controversial life of artist, Margaret Keane.
Wikipedia’s gives a quick synopsis of the situation:

“In the 1960s, Margaret Keane's artwork was sold under the name of her husband, Walter Keane, who claimed credit for her work. She left her home in San Francisco on November 1, 1964 for Hawaii, where she lived for 27 years. In March 1965, she divorced Walter. In 1970, she remarried to Honolulu sports writer Dan McGuire.[3] In 1970, Margaret Keane announced to the world, via radio broadcast, that she was the true creator of the paintings.[4] The Keanes continued to dispute the origin of the paintings, and after Walter Keane suggested to USA Today that the only reason Margaret claimed she was the painter was because she believed he was dead, she sued him in federal court for slander.[4] At the hearing, the Judge ordered both Margaret and Walter to create a big-eyed child painting in the courtroom to determine who was telling the truth.[1] Walter declined to paint before the court, citing a sore shoulder, whereas Margaret completed her painting in a mere 53 minutes. After three weeks of trial, a jury awarded Margaret $4 million in damages.

Yikes. That’s quite the drama. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing the movie.

And it got me to thinking about secrets and deception.

“Lying lips [are] abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly [are] his delight.”

“He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known.”

“Be not a witness against thy neighbor without cause; and deceive [not] with thy lips.”

Again, yikes.

So, no, it’s no big mystery God is not too fond of deception. And His perspective on the matter should not only warn us, but also encourage us.

And both the scriptures Matthew 10:27 and Luke 12:2-3, to me, exemplify that sentiment most powerfully.

“What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs.”

“For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known. Accordingly, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in the inner rooms will be proclaimed upon the housetops.”

If we’re busy being deceptive, sketchy and up to no good, here’s where the warning comes in.

However, if we have experienced injustice and wrongdoing, hurt by the deceptive actions of other people, then here’s where the good news aspect of it comes in for us. All will be revealed; it’s sobering and hopeful at the same time.

Let’s allow our eyes to be big eyes to that reality.
